Why is it important?
The lymph system is an important part of the body's drainage system and is also one of its main defences against infection.
The lymphatic system forms part of the body's immune (defence) system.
It forms a way by which harmful substances can be removed from the circulation.
What is it?
The lymph system is made up of:
- Fluid (lymph)
- Lymph vessels (drainage tubes for the lymph)
- Lymph nodes (glands)
How does the lymph system work?
Lymph vessels provide drainage channels for removing water, proteins and waste products from the tissues of the body. The fluid inside lymph vessels is called lymph.
Lymph first passes through tiny vessels many of which are near the skin surface. The lymph then flows into larger and deeper vessels deep inside the body and eventually back into the bloodstream. Once back in the bloodstream, the extra fluid leaves the body via the kidneys.
