Lipoedema

What does Lipoedema mean?

Lipoedema is a condition that is often mistaken for lymphoedema. It is a sort of swelling with recognisable characteristics and is caused by a disorder of the fatty tissue. It appears to affect women in particular and often starts during adolescence.  Lipoedema usually causes an increase in size around the buttocks, thighs and legs. The leg swelling often does not extend into the feet but stops around the ankles to cause a pantaloon effect. The hands and upper body tend to be unaffected. Although dieting may help to maintain body weight at a desirable level, it often does not help to reduce the swelling. The swollen parts of the body are often pale and cool to the touch. The skin may bruise easily and is tender when pressed.

Lipoedema can be treated in the same way as lymphoedema. Many people find that this helps to improve comfort and the shape of the swollen limbs.
