Compression Garments

What are compression garments?

The usual types of compression garments are sleeves, gloves, stockings or tights. They apply pressure around the limb when worn and thus provide support to reduce the swelling. They provide pressure to help the muscles to pump fluid away from the swollen area during movement and exercise. Your sleeve or stocking should feel supportive yet comfortable to wear. You will notice that after a short time it helps to reduce the swelling.

There are many different types and strengths of compression sleeves and stockings and it is important that you are provided with the right garment. You will be assessed for the garments that will help you best when you attend the lymphoedema clinic.

When caution is needed

Particular care is needed if you are troubled with poor circulation or sensation in the swollen limb. You will also need to be monitored carefully if you have cold hands or feet, have a heart problem or diabetes.

If you have cellulitis, you are advised to stop wearing the compression garment until the infection is resolved.

If you develop any discomfort or notice any changes to the skin when you are wearing your compression garment, you should take it off.  Ask your lymphoedema therapist or doctor for advice before you continue to use the garments.

Compression garments do not work well if they do not fit properly or if they are old and worn. If you are using them regularly, replacements are needed around every six months
