Using clothes to support the swelling
Materials that contain lycra may help to give light support to the swollen area.
- If you have swelling around the lower part of your body, you may find athletic or cycle shorts provide additional support
- A sports bra or elastic sports vest may help if you have swelling around the chest or breast area. Well fitting and supportive bras are available for women with breast swelling
Tight and narrow straps on clothes can restrict lymph flow across the skin. You will find that broader and padded straps are more comfortable and supportive. Tight bands caused by cuffs, socks, jewellery or rings may also restrict the lymph circulation and cause more problems with swelling.
Using shoes to support the swelling
You may need to persevere to find shoes that are well fitting. If you are able to find shoes that feel comfortable and smart it may be worth stocking up with more than one pair.
Unlike court shoes, footwear that laces up at the front will provide more support and help to keep the swelling under control. When you can, buy shoes made of soft, natural leather.
Although training shoes are often easier to fasten, they do not allow the air to circulate around the feet and can increase the risk of 'athlete's foot'.
